Compact car or SUV?
A compact automatic is economical and comfortable for two people travelling with sensible luggage. A medium SUV becomes attractive for families, ski gear and longer winter itineraries—not because normal tourist roads require off-road capability, but because extra space and a higher seating position reduce fatigue.
Four-wheel drive does not remove the need for chains where required, and rental conditions still apply. If you plan to visit ski fields, ask what winter equipment is available and whether the vehicle may use the access road.
A seven-day South Island route worth waking up early for
Days 1–2: Christchurch to Lake Tekapo. Collect after resting from your flight, then follow the inland route towards wide skies and the Mackenzie Basin. Leave time after dark for stargazing rather than another long drive.
Days 3–4: Aoraki/Mount Cook and Wānaka. Weather changes quickly near the mountains. Build a flexible afternoon into the plan so a cloud bank does not erase the highlight you flew across the world to see.
Days 5–7: Queenstown and Milford Sound. Queenstown is a useful base, but Milford is a very long return day. Share the driving, book a coach-cruise combination if nobody wants the late drive, or stay closer to Te Anau.
One-way hire can buy back a holiday day
Collecting in Christchurch and returning in Queenstown may cost more than a loop, but it can save an entire day of backtracking. Compare that fee with the value of an extra night, fuel and your limited holiday time. The cheapest rental is not automatically the best itinerary.
